This programme aims at providing basic English training for participants to build English skills for simple, functional purposes. It introduces the essentials of English grammar and covers the four basic skills in English learning.

Upon completion of the programme, participants will be able to demonstrate understanding of simple English structures and passage; express basic ideas, opinions and feelings; and communicate in simple English for daily use with reasonable clarity.

359101 Basic English Grammar
This course is designed for those who have elementary knowledge, but expect a better mastery of the English language.

Topics covered include: (1) introduction to parts of speech; (2) conjunctions; (3) questions; (4) modals; (5) tenses; (6) pronouns; (7) punctuation; (8) countable & uncountable nouns; (9) active/passive voices; (10) direct/indirect speeches; (11) prepositions; (12) subject-verb agreements; (13) question tags, (14) articles.

379101 Basic Listening Skills
Participants will be introduced to various strategies for building up their listening skills.

To enhance participants’ listening skills, features of spoken English: sounds stress and intonation, pauses and fillers will be reviewed. There will be lots of listening practice.

379104 English Phonetics
Phonetics is the foundation for training English speaking skills.

This course starts from IPA, monosyllabic and poly-syllabic, it provides training for participants to learn how to articulate sounds correctly.

Upon completion of the course, students can speak correctly.

379106 Practical Oral English
This course is for participants who wish to communicate clearly and effectively with other people in simple English.

Topics include greetings and introductions, asking and giving directions, shopping, dining, making enquiries, telephone conversations, and some catchy colloquialisms.

Accurate English pronunciation will also be emphasized.

Students will be expected to participate in oral classwork: pairwork, role-play and discussion.

369102 Practical Reading & Writing Skills

This course is designed for those who have some knowledge of English grammar, and wish to improve their writing skills.

It includes a review of good sentence writing and paragraph writing skills.

Particular attention will be paid to sentence cohesion, logical development and flow of ideas.

After this course, students may consider taking the course Writing Skills Workshop to sharpen their writing skills.


Normally students will take 1 to 2 module(s) in each School Term* in order to complete the whole Certificate programme within 1 year.

On the other hand, you may also plan your own study pace as long as you can complete the entire programme within 3 years (starting from the commencement date of the first module you studied).


To qualify for the award of the Certificate in English (Elementary Level), graduates must fulfill the following requirements:
(1) have an attendance rate of 70% or above in each module; and
(2) have passed the assessments of each module.

This course has been included in the list of reimbursable courses under the Continuing Education Fund. This course is recognised under the Qualifications Framework (QF Level 1).

Note: only eligible applicant who has successful completed the entire programme can apply for reimbursement of course fees. Students who have completed only some of the modules are NOT eligible for the application for reimbursement.

2. Benchmark Test Requirements
IELTS (Academic Module): An Overall Band Score of 3

Applicant should submit the claim for reimbursement of the benchmark test fees with the claim for the tuition fee of the Certificate in English (Elementary Level).
