CUSCS: A Pioneer

  • The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (CUSCS) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is the forerunner in providing structured training of global standards in career development in Hong Kong.

    • In May 2014, we introduced the Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) Programme, which was the first of its kind in Hong Kong that came with a credential from an international professional body, the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) in the USA. From 2014 to 2019, a total of 40 GCDF classes have been run, training over 1,000 professionals from a great variety of sectors, with more than 700 of them having sought the international credential.

    • In October 2019, building on our extensive experience in providing training in career development and facilitation, CUSCS introduced the Facilitating Career Development (FCD) programme (renamed by National Career Development Association (NCDA) as Facilitating Career Development Training and Certification program in October 2022) in Hong Kong. Under NCDA of the United States, which is the first, longest running and preeminent career development association in the world, the Programme is based on a comprehensie curriculum that represents a rich content coverage through substantial material development in the training modules. On completion, students are eligible to apply for the Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP) crendential.

    • In July 2020, CUSCS offered the first cohort of Professional Certificate in Career Development Facilitation (PCCDF) programme, a QF Level 5 and CEF-reimbursable programme with an CUHK award. PCCDF integrates global perspective with local context on career development facilitation and extends participants’ repertoire with a wider focus on the provision of better career services and programmes through more training in group facilitation, advanced communication skills, assessment tools, theories and approaches, and the needs of specific targets. The programme also qualifies students to apply for two globally recognised certifications, CCSP and GCDF, upon completion of the training.

  • To spread the fruits of career development to the wider community, CUSCS has organized public events that drew together talents with different backgrounds for sharing their experiences and insights:

    • In July 2015, the CUSCS Golden Jubilee Conference: Lifelong Education and Career Development was held where audience gained valuable exposure to 15 intriguing paper presentations.

    • In December 2015, the CUSCS 50th Anniversary Seminar on "Career Development as an Ongoing Lifelong Process" was organized with speakers invited from the U.S., Canada, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

    • In May 2019, the Master Workshop Series by Prof. Norman Amundson, who has written broadly and prolifically on career development and counseling, included six intensive workshops and drew in more than 300 participants.

  • Over the years, CUSCS has been coordinating the provision of career facilitation service to various target populations, particularly higher diploma students of CUSCS, undergrads of CUHK, and alumni of CUHK.

  • CUSCS has also been offering different modules and workshops for the continuing development of credentialed facilitators on topics including assessment tools, serving clients with special needs, and personal growth.
