GCDF 5th Anniversary Forum: New Trends in Career Development

Keynote 1: A New Career Development Paradigm: Overview of The Hope- Action Model of Career Development

The Hope-action model was developed by Professor Norman Amundson and two other scholars (described in Niles, Amundson & Neault, 2011). This model has a focus on a series of skill competencies captured in the image of a pinwheel. Action oriented hope is at the centre, and it connects with the competencies of self-reflection, self-clarity, visioning, goal setting and planning, as well as implementing and adapting. Environmental influences push the pinwheel and create motion. In a series of research studies, Professor Amundson and his colleagues have demonstrated how various active engagement intervention strategies support hope and enable people to consider more possibilities, initiate action, and overcome adversity (Niles, In & Amundson, 2014). Professor Amundson will provide an overview of this new approach and some of the intervention strategies that have been used to generate positive outcomes.

Speaker: Professor Norman Amundson, University of British Columbia

Keynote 2: What is Good Career Guidance? - Benchmarks and Good-Practice Examples

Career guidance and education has been an integral part of education in Hong Kong and around the world. Whereas different strategies and interventions have been used but there is not an agreement on what constitute "good" career guidance. This presentation will survey some of the key international models in career guidance with a focus on the standard and benchmarks developed by the Gatsby Foundation in the UK. Research findings from CLAP for Youth @ JC will be used to evaluate the progress of Hong Kong schools in reaching the benchmarks and how a set of good-practice standards could be developed locally.

Speaker: Professor Alvin Leung, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Workshop 1: Hope-Action Theory and Active Engagement in Action

Prof. Amundson will highlight key issues of the Hope-action approach and continue to demonstrate how the principles of this approach can be applied through active engagement. In addition to focusing on the "doing" aspect of career guidance, Prof. Amundson will also illustrate how effective career guidance must consider the way of "being". The "Doing" includes a series of exercises while the "being" can refer to a state of confusion but also a willingness to engage clients through openness, playfulness and flexibility.

Workshop 3: Metaphor Making in Action - Your Career, Your Life, Your Way

A metaphor is a figure of speech in which two unrelated ideas are placed together in such a way that the meaning of one of the ideas is superimposed and lends definition to the other. Metaphors are derived from our everyday life experiences. Learning to appreciate and work with metaphors takes time and practice. Prof. Amundson will help participants to "identify, explore, extend, and apply" metaphors by considering a number of different career metaphoric perspectives including archetypal metaphors, time-sequenced metaphors, career as navigation, a pathway, a garden, a life story, a book, or a series of roles, and so on. The metaphoric card sort exercise will be introduced to explore career themes. Demonstrations will be included in this 6-hour Workshop.
