Admission Requirements

Applicants shall
a. be Registered Nurses who are registered with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong with a valid practising certificate, and have at least two years of post-registration work experience;
AND
b. hold a relevant bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognised university.

Language Used

Cantonese and English. (All teaching materials and assessments will be in English.)

Programme Background and Objectives

This programme aims to equip registered nurses with the advanced specialised knowledge and skills to apply a systematic, informed and effective approach to the assessment, care and clinical management of individuals with gastrointestinal disease. The programme has been designed to advancing the knowledge and skills of registered nurses working in all settings where gastroenterological investigations and treatments are provided. A variety of educational approaches would be adopted, including lectures; case studies; seminars; discussions; clinical practicum and site visit in product company. Graduates of this programme are prepared to excel in the specialty areas of clinical gastroenterology with the advanced specialised knowledge and skills required to perform evidence-based practice.

Expected Programme Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, students will have acquired the ability to
1. Apply advanced knowledge and skills to specialised practice in gastroenterology nursing;
2. Critically appraise the nursing assessments, interventions and management in meeting the needs of patients and their families;
3. Demonstrate collaborative relationships with other members of the health care team, patients and their families;
4. Interpret issues in accordance with the ethico-legal requirements for people who are living with a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, liver or pancreas, and formulate appropriate care strategies; and
5. Critically evaluate current literature and utilize relevant up-to-date evidence to identify appropriate policies, management strategies and education for patients experiencing disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver or pancreas.

Programme Structure

The programme is composed of three courses and one clinical practicum:
1. Advanced Clinical Practice in Endoscopy Nursing
• Anatomy and Pathophysiology of the Digestive System and Respiratory Tract
• Investigations and Interventions of the Digestive System and Respiratory Tract
• Nursing Management of Patients with Diseases of the Digestive Tract and Respiratory Tract

2. Advanced Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology Nursing
• Advanced Learning on Anatomy and Pathophysiology of Gastrointestinal System
• Epidemiology of Gastroenteric Disorders
• Medical and Surgical Treatments, Nursing Management in Advanced Gastroenterology
• Advanced Practice in Gastroenterology Nursing

3. Quality and Safety in Gastroenterology Nursing
• Roles and Responsibilities Associated with Specialised Practice in Endoscopy Nursing
• Quality and Safety in Gastroenterology Nursing

4. Clinical Practicum
• Nursing Management of Patients Receiving Endoscopy in the Endoscopy Unit of Hospitals

Team of Instructors

• The team is composed of highly skilled and experienced professionals who specialise in endoscopy and
gastroenterology
• It includes clinicians and specialists in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Advanced Internal Medicine,
Respiratory Medicine and Surgery, ward managers, advanced practice nurses, and dietitians
• Each possesses a clinical background and pertinent expertise

Teaching and Learning Activities

A variety of educational approaches would be adopted, including lectures; case studies; seminars; discussions; clinical practicum and site visits in product company.

Assessment Methods

Assignments, presentations, portfolio, case analysis and evaluation, feedback from clinical mentors.

Award of Certificate

Participants will be awarded the " Professional Diploma in Gastroenterology Nursing " upon fulfilling the following requirements:
(a) An attendance rate of at least 70% in Courses 1, 2 and 3, and 100% in Course 4; and
(b) Completion of all the FOUR courses. Participants must obtain an overall pass in each course.

Professional Recognition

Students who have completed and met the award requirements will be awarded Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) points.
The Programme is recognised under the Qualifications Framework:
• Qualifications Framework Level 6
• QF Credit: 60 (Credit Accumulation and Transfer (Institutional))

Alterations

The School reserves the right to make alterations regarding the instructor, time, place and content of courses offered when necessary.

Continuing Education Fund

Enrolment

Enrolment forms are available from the website or at CUSCS Learning Centres. Please complete the enrolment form and submit it by post to the CUSCS Head Office or in person at CUSCS Learning Centres together with the following supporting documents. Fees paid are not refundable unless the enrolled programme is full or cancelled.
1) Separate crossed cheque of HK$150 for the application fee and crossed cheque for the tuition fee, both made payable to “The Chinese University of Hong Kong”;
2) Copy of Certificate of Registration (Issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong);
3) Copy of Valid Practising Certificate (Issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong);
4) Proof of employment (e.g Staff Identity card, letter from employer); and
5) Copy of Bachelor's degree Certificate.
