Overview
In this programme, participants will learn basic Spanish language skills at a level equivalent to A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It covers the language needed to understand daily expressions as well as simple phrases aimed at satisfying immediate needs. The learning methodology is mainly the communicative approach, giving priority to communication and the exchange of meanings. The basic grammar structure for this level, together with the vocabulary, will be taught using a variety of methods. Participants will be trained to put together their ideas using simple sentences so that they can express communicative needs related to everyday situations. The course develops the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) sometimes in a blended way.

Basic Spanish 1 (65 hours)
This course is designed for students without prior knowledge of Spanish. Participants will learn the essence of pronunciation and its relationship with the writing system. They will start to develop the basic Spanish grammar structures and will be able to explore the basic features of the Spanish language.
The following content will be covered:
a. Greetings, introducing oneself and others, exchanging basic personal information and details
b. Telling the numbers
c. Talking about family and occupations
d. Describing people and places
e. Describing one’s home and the furniture
f. Describing the cities and its geographical location
g. Introducing cultural socio-cultural behaviours, and other cultural aspects
Level: A1.1
Basic Spanish 2 (65 hours)
This course aims to enhance communication skills in various everyday situations, by further expanding and consolidating the understanding of basic grammatical structures and vocabulary. Students will further develop the Spanish grammar structures and will be able to explore the linguistic features of the Spanish language for the preparation of the DELE examination.
The following content will be covered:
a. Talking about free time activities
b. Telling date and time
c. Giving simple opinions to people
d. Shopping for clothes
e. Talking about food
f. Preparing for the DELE (A1) examination
Level: A1.2

Duration
Each module lasts for about 6 months. Normally students will complete Basic Spanish 1 to 2 in 15 months.
On the other hand, you may also continue with the next module in a later term as long as you can complete the entire programme within 3 years (starting from the commencement date of Basic Spanish 1).

Textbook
The instructor will provide the name of the textbook in the first class and students are required to purchase the textbook for the course. It is not included in the course fee.

Award
To qualify for the award of Certificate in Basic Spanish, students are required to:
1. have an attendance rate of 70% or above in each module; and
2. have passed the assessments of each module.
