Admission Requirement
1.Have completed CUSCS Certificate Programme in English (Intermediate Level) or equivalent; or demonstration of proficiency of an equivalent level; and
2. Have completed secondary education, or equivalent; or aged 21 or above
Overview
This programme upholds learning English skills in an integrated framework instead of separating them to suit the exam-oriented methodology typical in secondary education. Students learn and use the required language skills in connection with one another, rather than in separate courses that specialize in the drilling of one specific skill, be it reading, listening, speaking, or writing. This integrated approach offers a more comprehensive and coherent English learning experience that approximates authentic communicative contexts.
Through a variety of teaching approaches including but not limited to the communicative approach, the lexical approach, and the task-based learning approach as adopted in an expert-designed textbook, this programme aims to build on students’ basic grammar skills and English structures and expand their linguistic repertoire through exposure to and interaction with a range of authentic materials situated in common everyday settings. Through engagement in learning activities involving language materials of varied complexity and formality, students will become more ready and confident in expressing ideas with greater structure and fluency.

(Module 1) English Grammar for Everyday Use 日常英語文法
This course aims to conduct a practical review of basic English grammar for those who have some theoretical knowledge about the essential rules and structures. Emphasis will be placed on how they can be transformed to skills for use in everyday communication, and how nuances might cause significant differences in meaning in use.
(Module 2) Upper Intermediate English I 進階英語I
Building on basic grammar skills and English structures, this course constitutes the first step towards expanding students’ linguistic repertoire through exposure to and interaction with a range of authentic materials situated in common everyday settings. Emphasis will be placed on developing students’ readiness and confidence in giving simple expression to their ideas, feelings and thoughts.
(Module 3) Upper Intermediate English II 進階英語II
Building on knowledge gained from Upper Intermediate English I, this course further raises students’ awareness and readiness to engage with materials with a wider variety in formality and complexity. Higher-order skills are required of students in expressing and articulating ideas with greater structure, coherence, and tact.

Award
To qualify for the award of Certificate in English (Upper Intermediate Level), a student must:
1. have an attendance rate of 70% or above in each module; and
2. have passed the assessments of each module.
