Module 1: Overview of Practices of Occupational Safety and Health
Contact Hours: 45 hours

Objectives:
This module gives an introduction to occupational safety and health, including theories, ordinances and regulations, facts and cases in both international and local perspectives.

Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of the module, students are expected to:

  1. understand safety and health risk issues in work environment as well as the purposes and importance of occupational safety and health management at workplace;
  2. have acquired working knowledge of the legislation framework and statutory requirements in relation to occupational safety and health in Hong Kong, which cover Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance (CAP 59) and subsidiary regulations, Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance (CAP 509) and subsidiary regulations, and other related ordinances and regulations.

Module 2: Occupational Safety and Hazard Management
Contact Hours: 30 hours

Objectives:
This module teaches the participants concepts and elements of occupational safety as well as principles and procedures in hazard management which can be applied in major types of work environments.

Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of the module, students are expected to:

  1. be able to analyze the safety issues of various hazard types in major types of workplaces, including construction sites, catering establishments, factories, laboratories, and other common work environments, e.g. office setting;
  2. have acquired knowledge and skills in hazard management, including hazard identification, accident investigation and risk assessment;
  3. be able to recommend and implement control measures on occupational safety, including hazard prevention and risk reduction in general.

Module 3: Occupational Health, Hygiene and Ergonomics
Contact Hours: 30 hours

Objectives:
This module teaches the participants knowledge of occupational health, hygiene and ergonomics. It covers commonly known health problems and musculoskeletal disorders in office setting (e.g. display screen equipment), health hazards arising from appliances and processes in different types of workplaces, as well as other environmental risks in indoor and outdoor work environment.

Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of the module, students are expected to:

  1. have acquired knowledge and skills in recognizing, preventing and controlling hazards and occupational diseases from daily work environment and those arising from the use of chemical or biological agents, physical devices and radioactive materials in specific work environment;
  2. be able to demonstrate principles and techniques in exposure measurement and assessment for various occupational health hazards;
  3. be able to recommend and implement preventive measures and monitoring programmes for the above workplace health hazards.

Module 4: Occupational Safety and Health Management System
Contact Hours: 45 hours

Objectives:
This module equips students with knowledge of and skills in occupational safety and health management, implementation of occupational safety management systems in particular, so that students can meet the legal and regulatory requirements in managing related hazard issues and carry out duties as safety and health officers or managers in Hong Kong.

Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of the module, students are expected to:

  1. have acquired knowledge and skills in formulating safety and health policies, organizing training and promotion programmes, and implementing safety and health measures suiting specific needs of users and work environment;
  2. be able to apply the management principles in evaluating and monitoring the safety management system by conducting audits and reviews, and therefore further improving the systems.

Module 5: Practical Training and Safety Management Project
Contact Hours: 30 hours

Objectives:
This module allows students to put what have been learnt into practice. Each student will conduct an individual project on inspection, investigation, assessment and reporting at studentsˇ¦ own workplace or worksite selected by students with approval from project supervisors. After attending the required workshops, students have to design a checklist of inspection items, carry out safety inspection in the selected work environment and write an interim report on the observations (which should include an analysis of the occupation safety and health hazards; problematic work practices and/or processes). Based on the feedbacks from supervisors, students have to submit a final report with assessment on various measures to the risks identified and the final action plan of the best solution selected. Each student should consult her/his project supervisor for the final topic.

Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of the module, students are expected to:

  1. have acquired practical skills and techniques in safety inspection, hazard identification, accident investigation, as well as documentation and reporting of safety and health related incidents;
  2. have been equipped with real-life experience in occupational safety and health inspection, investigation, assessment and reporting.
