The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong launched Korean courses in the autumn of 2001 to provide opportunities for the Hong Kong general public to learn the language. In the summer of 2003, SCS introduced a certificate programme in Korean, the first award-bearing programme of its kind in Hong Kong. Currently, about 400 students are learning Korean at SCS. Furthermore, the Test of Proficiency in Korean (previously known as Korean Proficiency Test) administered by SCS and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong has become a great opportunity for Korean learners to set specific goals for learning since 2003. On top of that, "The 1st Korean Speech Contest" was held in November 2005 to further promote the learning of the Korean language in Hong Kong.
With the success of the Korean Speech Contest in previous years, SCS will organise "The 4th Korean Speech Contest" this year. The final will be held on 13 December 2008 at Lecture Theatre, Bank of America Tower, 12 Harcourt Road, Central, Hong Kong.
