Programme Objectives



The rapid advancement of digital technology has made drastic changes in entertainment, advertisement and other product designs in various sectors. Animation breaths "life" to cinematographic objects and various designed objects with the power of visual effects which stretch human imagination.
Hong Kong has made important milestones in the international entertainment market in achieving various digital awards. Centro Digital Pictures Ltd and Menfond Electronic Art & Computer Design Co. Ltd are local acclaimed examples. The NASSCOM animation report estimated that the total global animation production figures is US $45.0B in 2004 and projected to be US $51.7B in 2005.
The rapid development of digital animation market is drawing a significant demand on the education of digital animation and related technologies. Application opportunities for visualization effects in entertainment, edutainment, advertisement, designs and so on are virtually boundless depending on one's innovation and creativity. The Higher Diploma (HD) in Digital Animation and Creative Media is to address this manpower needs. The programme aims to prepare students to work as digital animators, media producers, designers, multimedia programmers, computer graphic designers, advertising designers, video and film producers, as well as creative industry managers.
The objectives of this programme are:

To provide students with a solid knowledge of digital imaging unsing 2D/3D computer grapics and creative media production; |

To develop students with creative skills in the production of digital video, audio, animation and multimedia applications; AND |
|
To prepare students for careers and further studies in animation design, creative media, and other related fields. |

Programme Structure
The programme is designed with multi-entry and multi-exit provision in meeting the spectrum of student needs. Basically, the normal duration of study will be three years for Form 5 or equivalent entrants, and two years for Form 7 or equivalent entrants.
The 3-year programme
The 3-year programme consists of 33-34 modules with 1,350 hours of instruction. There are approximately 11 modules to be completed each year.
The 2-year programme
The 2-year programme consists of 23-24 modules with 945 hours of instruction. There are approximately 12 modules to be completed each year.

Articulation to Degree Programme
Graduates will be able to pursue degree studies in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, other local universities, overseas tertiary institutes and off-shore programmes of overseas universities in Hong Kong.
SCS also jointly offers a Top-up degree programme in Bachelor of Business (Computer Systems Management) with Victoria University, Australia. HD graduates can pursue and complete this degree within 1 to 1.5 years.
Articulation arrangements with overseas institutions have been established for graduates to articulate to their Bachelor's degree programmes.

Minimum Admission Requirements
The 3-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
five passes which include Level 2 / Grade E in Chinese Language and English Language in the HKCEE, or completion of Project Yi Jin, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants are required to attend an interview.)
The 2-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
pass in one A Level or two AS Level subjects, or completion of a Pre-Associate Degree programme, plus the minimum admission requirement of the 3-year programme, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants are required to attend an interview.)
Remarks
Holders of relevant recognised Diploma / Higher Certificate will be considered on an individual basis.

General Information
Mode of Delivery
This is a taught programme. Classes will be conducted in the form of lectures, practices and seminars. A final year project is a requisite for each student. It integrates the knowledge acquired by students in earlier years of study and applies to practical issues.
Medium of Instruction
Teaching activities will be conducted in English, Cantonese and Putonghua as deemed appropriate. Learning materials will be in English and Chinese as deemed appropriate.
Assessment Methods
Performance of students is monitored and assessed on a continuous basis through a variety of assessment tools, such as projects, classroom participation, assignments and final examination.
