Higher Diploma programmes offer students the best mix of academic and practical learning. In support of the government initiative in enhancing access to higher education, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) launched its Higher Diploma programmes in 2002. The School aims at providing secondary school leavers, who may not directly benefit from the traditional routes of university entry, with greater career and higher education opportunities. Youngsters who do not have direct access to university are no less talented than their peers. The Judge's Award (Hong Kong) of the EPSON Color Imaging Contest 2007 won by Miss Hazel Ma, a student of our Higher Diploma Programme in Commercial Design, provides strong evidence of these youngsters' strength and potential.
The popularity of our Higher Diploma programmes is demonstrated by the continuous rise in enrolment. More than 1,000 freshmen joined us last September when our new Mongkok Learning Centre came into use, providing students with additional excellent learning facilities.
These youngsters are uncut diamonds. The School offers a good variety of top quality programmes to unleash their hidden potentials. To cater for the needs of these young learners, two new Higher Diploma Programmes in Public Relations & Advertising and in Chinese Journalism respectively have been approved with classes starting in September 2008. Adding these two on the list, the School will offer 21 Higher Diploma programmes, spanning across the disciplines of Business and Management, Languages and Communication, Information Technology, Art and Design, Social Sciences, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. To facilitate students pursuing degree studies, the School has established articulation agreements with more than 40 overseas and Mainland universities. Graduates of our Higher Diploma programmes may seek to articulate to the senior years of undergraduate programmes either locally, on the Mainland or overseas.
In addition to the pursuit of academic excellence, our students have ample opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the industries. The School has been offering numerous internship programmes in collaboration with major corporations, such as Hong Kong Disneyland, Hospital Authority and Hong Kong Housing Society. On graduation from our Higher Diploma programmes, students will have not only acquired a recognised qualification, but also laid a solid foundation to pursue further studies or get a head start in their desired profession.
