What are sub-degree programmes ?

Sub-degree programmes include programmes leading to qualifications at the level of Associate Degree, Higher Diploma or Pre-Associate Degree programmes.

What are the differences between Higher Diploma and Associate Degree?

Both Higher Diploma and Associate Degree programmes equip students with generic skills, knowledge in specialised disciplines and practical vocational skills. In general, Higher Diploma programmes are more vocation-oriented, while Associate Degree programmes put more emphasis on general education. Upon completion of Higher Diploma programmes, graduates should be able to master general skills and to pursue career, university education or studies in specialised areas.

What is the range of tuition fees for self-financed Higher Diploma programmes? Does the Government offer any financial assistance to students??

According to information available, the tuition fees for self-financed Higher Diploma programmes range from $35,000 to $50,000. The Government provides a package of financial assistance schemes to eligible students, including means-tested grant, low-interest loan, non-means-tested loan and travel subsidy. Details of the schemes can be obtained from the Student Financial Assistance Agency
(Telephone : 2802-2345, homepage :http://www.info.gov.hk/sfaa/schemes/index.htm).

Can graduates of Higher Diploma programmes pursue further studies in overseas universities?

Some local Higher Diploma programmes are linked with universities outside Hong Kong. Subject to academic results and articulation arrangement, graduates may be admitted to 2nd or 3rd year of Bachelor programmes at overseas universities. Countries that recognise Higher Diplomas include China, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.

Is there any joint admission arrangement for Higher Diploma programmes?

No. As the nature and duration of the programmes differ, it would be difficult to implement joint admission. Nevertheless, institutions generally conduct admission exercises between June and August.

When should students enrolling in Higher Diploma programmes pay tuition fees? Is there any refund arrangement?

Tuition fee payment and refund arrangements are conducted at the discretion of individual institutions. However, the Government suggests that the deadline for payment of tuition fees should be later than the announcement of JUPAS results. Students should also enquire in detail the refund arrangements of institutions to avoid misunderstanding.

How should students choose Higher Diploma programmes?

When choosing Higher Diploma programmes, students should approach the institutions for details of the course contents, the subjects offered, their articulation arrangements with other universities etc. For professional programmes, it is important to know whether the programmes are recognised by local or overseas professional bodies and the extent of exemption from professional examinations. In short, students should make detailed enquiries and comparisons before they decide which programme to enrol in.

Are the Higher Diploma programmes offered by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCS) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong recognised?

Higher Diploma programmes offered by SCS have undergone stringent vetting procedures of the Senate of the University. They are recognised by the Government of the HKSAR.

How is the prospect of graduates of Higher Diploma programmes?

Higher Diploma programmes are generally recognised to be equivalent to Associated Degree programmes. Graduates can apply for civil service or non-civil service positions with Higher Diploma as entry level.
