Introduction
The Advanced Professional Diploma Programme in Information Technology for Librarian is designed to assist participants to achieve an understanding of internet applications as a background knowledge for automated information services in libraries, information centres and in related occupational settings. The recent development of digital libraries and electronic publishing is also the focus of training provided.

Objectives
Upon completion of this Advanced Professional Diploma Programme, participants will be able to:
(a) use appropriate skills in setting up an Intranet and managing a valuable Intranet server.
(b) master the skills to produce feature-rich multimedia web pages using popular web publishing tools.
(c) develop competence in creating dynamic webpages and designing relational database for various applications, such as on-line transactions, inventory control and reservation.
(d) identify the major steps, methods and techniques for developing an electronic system for a library.
(e) understand the development, operations and functions of digital libraries and electronic publishing.

Programme Duration and Structure
The Programme consists of 180 contact hours and can be completed in 18 months.
The current 6 modules are listed as follows:

Module 1 Introduction to Programming 15 hours
-Introduction to the computer programming
-Data Types and Variables
-Assignment, Arithmetic, Relational and Logical Operators
-Control-flow Statements
-Iterative statements
-Selection statements
-I/O operations
-Modular Programming with Functions
-Arrays, Pointers and Strings
-Sorting and Searching Algorithm

Module 2 Multimedia and Interactive Webpage Development 45 hours
-Web page design terminology
-Things to consider on production - cost, intended audience, content and layout design
-Basic design, color theory and limitation on the web media
-WWW Homepage authoring using HTML
-Basic web graphics production skills - Use of "Fireworks" to create web graphics and modify digital photo or scanned images for web uses
-Basic web animation techniques - Use of "Flash" to create simple animated web graphics with sound
-Putting all together - Use of "Dreamweaver" to produce web page layout with texts, web graphics and Flash animation plus other multimedia elements like sounds, music and video clips
-Upload web pages to web servers and things to consider

Module 3 Database Technologies for Library I 30 hours
-Introduction to Database Systems
-Database Management Systems Installation
-Database and User Accounts Creation
-The Context, Phases and Techniques in Designing and Building DBMS
-Storage and File Organizations
-Data Retrieval Methods Transactions, Concurrency, Recovery and Integrity
-Structured Query Language (SQL) programming
-Integration of SQL in procedural languages
-Database Access from Web-based Applications

Module 4 Database Technologies for Library II 30 hours
-Introduction, Installation and PHP configuration
-Basic Syntax, Operators and expressions of PHP
-HTTP authentication, sessions and cookies
-RDBMS basics, database design and terms
-Access control in MySQL
-Introduction to MySQL and its installation and configuration methods
-Usage of Structured Query Language (SQL) focus on SQL of MySQL
Connections between PHP and MySQL

Module 5 Integrated Systems and Services: Information Technology in the Library 30 hours
-Principles of automation of library systems
-Electronic devices in library systems
-Introduction to networking and Intranet technology
-Computer networking and library systems
-Database technology in library systems
-User interfaces and usability of integrated library systems
-Evaluation of integrated library systems
-A trend for library automation: electronic library

Module 6 Introduction to Digital Libraries and Electronic Publishing
-The Internet and media in publishing
-Libraries and publishers
-Reader and organizations-
-Economic and legal issues
-Access management and security
-Content
-Storages and archives
-current research

Mode of Delivery
This Programme will be delivered by face-to-face instruction.

Medium of Instruction
Teaching activities will be conducted in Cantonese, supplemented by English. Learning materials will be in both English and Chinese as deemed appropriate.

Venue
All teaching activities will be held at SCS learning centers.

Assessment Methods and Award of Diploma
A participant's performance is monitored and assessed on a continuous basis through a variety of assessment methods, such as projects, participation in class, assignments and final examination. To qualify for the award of diploma by SCS, CUHK, a participant must:

*have an attendance rate of at least 70% in each module; and
*have passed the assessment of each module.

Admission Requirements
Applicants should have successfully completed the "Diploma Programme for Library Assistants" organized by SCS, CUHK or equivalent.

Admission Requirements
Applicants seeking for admission to the Programme should have successfully completed the "Diploma Programme for Library Assistants"organized by SCS, CUHK or equivalent.
