Programme Objectives

The overall objective of the programme is to provide students with the academic, technical and management skills that will enable them to pursue careers in the administration and management of libraries and information centres.

To help students understand the role and significance of library and information services in a knowledge-based economy;
To provide students with updated knowledge and skills in using information sources and technologies; and
To enable students to develop competence to work at libraries, information centers and information systems in both public and private sectors.

Programme Structure

The 3-year programme
The programme consists of 31 modules with 1,350 contact hours of instruction. It will be completed in 3 years of full-time study. There are 8 to 10 modules to be completed each year.

The 2-year programme
The programme consists of 24 modules with 1,050 contact hours of instruction. It will be completed in 2 years of full-time study. There are 12 modules to be completed each year.

Minimum Admission Requirements

The 3-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
five passes which include Level 2 / Grade E in Chinese Language and English Language in the HKCEE, or completion of Project Yi Jin, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to pursue the programme, and attend an interview.)

The 2-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
pass in one A Level or two AS Level subjects, or completion of a Pre-Associate Degree programme, plus the minimum admission requirement of the 3-year programme, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to pursue the programme, and attend an interview.)

General Information

Mode of Delivery
Classes will be conducted in the form of lectures, tutorials and seminars. A final year practicum is a core element of the programme and is required of each student.

Medium of Instruction
Teaching activities will be conducted in English, Cantonese and Putonghua as deemed appropriate. Learning materials will be in English and Chinese as deemed appropriate.
