Programme Objectives

The major objectives of this Programme are to provide a comprehensive training in Chinese and equip students with the essential Putonghua knowledge and creative writing skills.

Graduates of this Programme can

possess sufficient Putonghua knowledge;
acquire basic understanding of and approaches to interpret classical and modern Chinese literature and their development;
acquire specialised writing skills and be able to write in different genres;
master literary writing skills and be able to write poem, fiction, prose and drama script; and
acquire an analytical and critical ability to further study in related discipline.

Programme Structure

The Programme will be run on a credit-based system with a total of 33 modules.

The 3-year programme
Students are required to attain a total of 90 credit units including 84 required units and 6 elective units.

The 2-year programme
Students are required to attain a total of 70 required credit units including 68 required units and 2 elective units.
New modules may be added and / or updated in future to meet the changing needs of students.

Articulation to Degree Programme

Articulation arrangements with various overseas institutions are in progress for graduates of the programme to apply for admission to their bachelor's degree programmes.

Minimum Admission Requirements

The 3-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
five passes which include Level 2 / Grade E in Chinese Language and English Language in the HKCEE, or completion of Project Yi Jin, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants may be required to sit for an entrance test and required to attend an interview.)

The 2-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
pass in AS Level Chinese Language and Culture and any other one AS Level or A Level subject, or completion of a Pre-Associate Degree programme, plus the minimum admission requirement of the 3-year programme, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants may be required to sit for an entrance test and required to attend an interview.)

Acceptance will be subject to the decision of the selection committee.

General Information

Mode of Delivery
This programme will be delivered mainly by face-to-face instruction, supplemented with group discussions, seminars and language skill practice.

Medium of Instruction
Teaching activities will be conducted in English, Cantonese and Putonghua as deemed appropriate. Learning materials will be in English and Chinese as deemed appropriate.

Assessment Methods
Performance of students is monitored and assessed on a continuous basis using a variety of assessment tools, such as projects, classroom participation, assignments and final examination.
