Programme Objectives
Hong Kong's externally-oriented economy is greatly influenced by the continuously changing global developments. As a cosmopolitan city as well as part of China, Hong Kong needs to have effective communication and business exchanges with the globalised world markets. Bi-literacy and tri-lingualism should be strongly promoted in Hong Kong. Hong Kong people should not be fluent solely in Cantonese, but should also be competent in both English and Putonghua at a relatively high standard.
The Higher Diploma Programme in Applied Translation Studies. The programme sets its focuses on the practical use of Chinese and English in their written and spoken forms, and a solid mastery of translation techniques.
The major objective of the programme is to provide intensive and high quality training at a post-secondary level for participants who will pursue their career in any fields that require a good command of Chinese and English as well as translation skills. It is anticipated that participants of this programme will:

Enhance students' spoken and written fluency in both English and Chinese at a post-secondary level; |

Master the ability to translate from Chinese into English and vice versa; and to interpret between Cantonese, Putonghua and English; and |
|
Enable students to be well enquipped with professional knowledge for tertiary education and / or employment in the related subject areas. |

Programme Structure
This programme will be offered on a full-time basis. The normal duration will be three years for Form 5 entrants, and two years for Form 7 entrants. The programme is based on a credit unit system:
The 3-year programme
Form 5 entrants have to earn at least 90 units of modules which include
86 required units of major courses; and
4 units in elective courses of the participant's choice.
The 2-year programme
Form 7 entrants and graduates of the Diploma Programme in English and Chinese have to earn at least 70 units of modules which include:
66 required units of major courses; and
4 units in elective courses of the participant's choice.

Minimum Admission Requirements
The 3-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
five passes which include Level 2 / Grade E in Chinese Language and English Language in the HKCEE, or completion of Project Yi Jin, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants may be required to sit for an entrance test and required to attend an interview.)
The 2-year programme
Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:
pass in AS Level Chinese Language and Culture and Use of English, or completion of a Pre-Associate Degree programme, plus the minimum admission requirement of the 3-year programme, or equivalent qualification; or
be mature students at the age of 21 or above. (Applicants may be required to sit for an entrance test and required to attend an interview.)
Acceptance will be subject to the decision of the selection committee.

General Information
Mode of Delivery
This programme will be delivered mainly by face-to-face instruction, supplemented with on-line materials as deemed appropriate.
Medium of Instruction
Teaching activities will be conducted in English, Cantonese and Putonghua as deemed appropriate. Learning materials will be in English and Chinese as deemed appropriate.
Assessment Methods
Performance of participants is monitored and assessed on a continuous basis through a variety of assessment methods, such as projects, classroom participation, assignments, tests and examinations.
