Programme Objectives

Hong Kong's externally-oriented economy is greatly influenced by the continuously changing global developments. As a cosmopolitan city as well as part of China, Hong Kong needs to have effective communication and business exchanges with the globalised world markets. Bi-literacy and tri-lingualism should be strongly promoted in Hong Kong. Hong Kong people should not be fluent solely in Cantonese, but should also be competent in both English and Putonghua at a relatively high standard.

The Higher Diploma Programme in Applied Translation Studies. The programme sets its focuses on the practical use of Chinese and English in their written and spoken forms, and a solid mastery of translation techniques.

The major objective of the programme is to provide intensive and high quality training at a post-secondary level for participants who will pursue their career in any fields that require a good command of Chinese and English as well as translation skills. It is anticipated that participants of this programme will:

Enhance students' spoken and written fluency in both English and Chinese at a post-secondary level;
Master the ability to translate from Chinese into English and vice versa; and to interpret between Cantonese, Putonghua and English; and
Enable students to be well enquipped with professional knowledge for tertiary education and / or employment in the related subject areas.
